Six months ago, I wrote about how to make good use of your time in order to accomplish more. One of the most important things you can do is prioritize your day by getting rid of distractions. A few weeks ago I realized that my phone was one such distraction and needed to be banished from my life. I typically get about 3 hours of work done each day. If I spend an hour each morning answering my inbox and going through everything, then that leaves me about 2 hours to get work done. I decided that I did not want to waste that time on email every day. There are other ways to do this without sacrificing effectiveness, but I just decided it was time to get rid of my phone for the morning. The first day was rough. I had sudden urges to respond to emails or take care of things immediately. However, after the first day, the urge went away and so did the distraction for the rest of the day. It’s amazing how much clarity you get when you’re not constantly checking your phone for new messages each 5 minutes. The morning ritual has become much more productive. I now use that time to think through my day and plan out how I will accomplish what needs to be done. It’s not perfect – For example, sometimes I don’t get everything done and have to do it later in the day – but I know that over time I’ll become more productive and less likely to put off things that need to be done. I don’t want to completely eliminate the phone from my life because it has served me well, but instead find ways to utilize it in ways that are beneficial for me. This is one such way where the phone can become a productivity tool for me, rather than a distraction. If you have any other suggestions please comment below. -Todd P.S. This is the first time that I’ve done a diary entry on my own site, so any comments are appreciated! I’ve also found it interesting to write about things that are not typical “small business” related topics which is why I chose to write about productivity. Let me know what you think! Notes:1. It has nothing to do with productivity." 3. Todd's "Diary of a Doodler" is still available. Todd Davis' contact info can be found here . Industry Crowdfunding - https://www.kickstarter. cfa1e77820
